Character: Pharaun Mizzrym
Series/Fandom: War of the Spider Queen hexad (Forgotten Realms)
Original or Alternate: Original
Age: Chronologically, probably around 150. (Guess based on canonical info) Apparently, early 20s (by human standards).
Gender: Male
Species: Elf, Drow
Sexuality: Heterosexual (for the most part, at least)
Appearance: As a typical drow, Pharaun has blueish-black skin, long white hair, and red eyes (and, of course, pointed ears). He's short and slight by human standards, being just over five feet tall and weighing around 120 pounds. He prides himself on his sense of fashion, and generally dresses in fine robes, with a cloak known as a piwafwi worn over them. Because he is a wizard, the piwafwi has many pockets in it. He lacks a finger on one hand.
Personality: Pharaun is, to put it bluntly, a scheming, conniving, weasel. It's only to be expected; he's a drow, after all. He's evil, with the desire for power of both a wizard and a drow. For all that, however, he is genuinely a people person, and has an active sense of humor, which is a rare trait in his kind. He does tend to carry his jests too far, however. He loves a challenge, and doesn't think much of authority, except as something to put himself in. These three traits have gotten him into trouble before, but it's never been anything he couldn't get out of... until the last time. He's also very resourceful - for instance, he once managed to cast a spell with his feet.
Abilities/Weapons: As a drow, Pharaun can see in the deepest natural darkness, has limited natural resistance to magic, and can produce magical darkness. In addition, Pharaun is a master of Sorcere, so he's an accomplished wizard, particularly in the area of spells that produce illusions. He generally has a spell for just about every situation, and if he hasn't got it prepared, he's probably got a scroll in a pocket somewhere.
He keeps many magical items about his person - scrolls and wands for spells he can't cast just at the moment, as well as various magical talismans and trinkets, including one silvery ring that transforms into a magically animated rapier. His piwafwi is heavily fortified with protective enchantments.
Weaknesses: Pharaun suffers from the limitation placed on all wizards in or under his world: he can only cast so many spells per day. To retain more spells, he must rest (this is admittedly only spending a few hours in a trance, rather than taking a full night's sleep) and study his spellbook. Many of his spells also require material components to cast. Like all drow, he's nearly blind in bright sunlight. His built-in disrespect for authority, along with his curiosity and tendency to take jokes too far, tends to get him into serious situations (this was a particularly bad combination in drow society).
History: (Spoilers for the War of the Spider Queen series) As the son of the Matron of House Mizzrym in the female-dominated drow society of Menzoberranzan, Pharaun was always subordinate to his sisters. He was sent to Sorcere to learn wizardry at a young age, and ended up on the losing side of a conflict between two of his older sisters. He managed to escape back to Sorcere, eventually becoming a master. After a failed ritual to obtain the power of the Sarthos demon which killed seven apprentices, the Archmage, Gromph Baenre, sent him to discover why so many males were absconding from their Houses lately. He managed to rope his friend Ryld Argith into helping him through a series of events that eventually led to his destroying an illithid lich and thwarting a plot that would have destroyed the city of Menzoberranzan.
He was sent on a mission to determine why the patron goddess of the drow, Lloth, was no longer granting her clerics spells. The mission led him to Ched Nasad, trying the patience of his companions all the way. En route to the city, he made the acquaintance of a rather charming alu-fiend called Aliisza. This proved to be a mistake, as she rather took exception to his rescue of a female drow called Danifae as the City of Shimmering Webs collapsed into disorder and, eventually, rubble. Following a contact, the group was sent to the Abyss to discover the secret of Lloth's silence, only to find that they had been tricked so that a rival god could kill the Spider Queen. The attempt fails, and they escape the Abyss to continue their quest. Ryld and a drow called Halisstra Melarn leave the group, and Pharaun and the rest journey to find a ship of chaos to take them to the Abyss in person. At the aboleth-infested lake where the ship resides, Pharaun and the leader of the party, Quenthel Baenre (High Priestess of Lloth and Gromph's sister) both make and fail attempts on each others' life.
They finally get the ship started with Aliisza's help (which can't be good news), and sail to the Abyss, reuniting with Halisstra, who at first intends to kill Lloth, but switches sides when Pharaun's group defeats her. In a battle with the hordes of demons that infest the Abyss, Pharaun is paralyzed and left to be eaten alive by a swarm of spiders. Aliisza, rather than helping, absconds with the mage's Sorcere ring and the finger it was attached to.
